HO scale model railroad

Cotton Belt 49012 - Exactrail Double Door Boxcar

The peeling and cracked lettering on this boxcar was achieved using turpentine. This technique was discovered quite by accident on another model. After seeing this type of boxcar in a prototype picture with cracking and peeling lettering and reporting marks, I decided to try it on this model. For some reason this only seems to work on lettering applied by Exactrail. Generally, the first thing I will do on a model prior to any weathering is to hit it with a dusting of dullcoat to seal the factory finish. Neglecting to do this on another Exactrail model and then applying a oil paint wash, the lettering started to crack and bubble. I repeated that procedure on this model in a more controlled method of very light application to achieve that look here.
